Dr. Susan Belanger Named System Ethicist for Covenant Health


Covenant Health is very pleased to announce that Dr. Susan Belanger has accepted the position of System Ethicist for Covenant Health. For the past year, Sue has served as our Ethics Consultant, and in her new role, will be reporting to Reynold Spadoni, Vice President, Mission.  

Currently an Associate Professor and Program coordinator for the graduate online nursing program at St. Joseph's College in Standish (ME), Sue has been a nurse for almost 40 years.  She began her career by earning a diploma in nursing from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Lewiston (ME) and has since gone on to earn several more degrees, including a PhD in Nursing as well as a master's degree in bioethics and health policy.

Sue previously worked at Covenant Health member St. Mary's Health System in Lewiston. She began her career at St. Mary's as a staff nurse in the ICU, and over the years, assumed several leadership positions including that of Chief Nursing Officer.

Sue has over a decade of experience dealing with ethical issues and topics.   She has participated on institutional ethics committees and has chaired a hospital committee in Washington, D.C. She has served as a senior research scholar in ethics with a focus on providing ethics consultations and education. Sue also teaches ethics to advance practice nurses as an adjunct professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at Georgetown University.

In her role as System Ethicist, Sue will serve as a resource person to our acute and post-acute care ministries across Covenant Health. We are certain that Sue will provide Covenant Health with invaluable insight and a unique perspective in her new role.
