First Lepage Patient Experience Grant Recipients Announced at St. Mary’s Health System

06.04.2018

Grants Funded by Albert Lepage Foundation Donation

Lewiston, ME – June 4, 2018 – The first Lepage Patient Experience Grants, which were funded by an Albert Lepage Foundation donation, were announced at St. Mary’s Health System.

Nine grants were presented to a variety of project proposals, all of which included direct input from staff and patients. Selected project proposals were chosen based on their potential to improve patient care quality, enhance patient safety and improve patient outcomes. Twenty-two total applications were submitted by St. Mary’s employees and reviewed by the Lepage Patient Experience Advisory Council.

“This project proposal and grants process encourages our entire staff, who are at the front of the patient experience, to suggest how we can improve the way a patient feels about their time with us,” said Peter Holden, Interim President, St. Mary’s Health System. “It’s a unique approach to motivating our staff to pitch creative ideas and articulate the value they’ll deliver to our patients. We’ve been very pleased with the results.”

Examples of fully-funded proposals:

  • St. Mary’s Nutrition Center – Submitted by Sherie Blumenthal and Kirsten Walter
This initiative is two pronged. It will provide those in need with basic kitchen items to prepare healthy meals and create access to healthy food with gift card donations and access information.
  • Women’s Health – Submitted by Kelsie Straw and Terri Whalen
This effort will ensure prenatal and post-delivery support to new mothers with basic education, personal hygiene products and more comfortable hospital gowns and robes.
  • New England Foot and Ankle/St. Mary’s Center for Orthopaedics – Submitted by Jessica Faught, MD and Greg Pomeroy, MD
This practice will improve its waiting area by adding reclining chairs, for patients that need to elevate their feet, and a coffee/water station for patients who’ve traveled long distances for treatment. They will also incentivize patients to commit to post-surgery activity by raffling off a fitness tracker monthly.
  • Emergency Department/Urgent Care – Submitted by Patricia Hutchins, Jason Rosenberg and Tracy Tippie, MD
These departments will launch online scheduling to help reduce volume and decrease patient wait times during peak treatment hours.

Proposals from other grant recipients focused on HIV/AIDS Case Management, CCS Psychiatry, Family Birthing Unit, Integrative Medicine and Environmental Services.

“When I helped establish the Center for Patient Experience, I couldn’t have imagined how this grants process would evolve. These grants will touch so many facets of the St. Mary’s system, including providing a roadmap to healthy eating for community members needing our services, bringing social attention to HIV/AIDS patients in need and offering hotel-like evening turndown service amenity in the hospital,” said Lepage. “Our grant recipients are imaginative thinkers and their innovative ideas will improve a patient’s experience. Congratulations to all the recipients of this first round of Lepage grants.”
