Dr. Joanna Swartzbaugh and Dr. David Weitman Now Seeing New Patients



Joanna R. Swartzbaugh, M.D. BANGOR, Maine – October 14, 2019 – St. Joseph Healthcare, a member of Covenant Health, is pleased to announce the addition of two neurosurgeons, Joanna R. Swartzbaugh, M.D. and David W. Weitman, M.D., Ph.D. to St. Joseph Neurosurgery.  

“Drs. Swartzbaugh and Weitman have been serving our community and hospital for many years as part of Northeast Neurosurgery. We’re honored and excited to have them officially join the St. Joseph family,” said William Wood, M.D., Vice President for Medical Affairs. “Their extensive experience and expertise will allow us to better serve our patients and expand access to these important services across the communities we serve.” 

Dr. Swartzbaugh earned her bachelor’s degree in physics at the University of Florida in Gainsville, Florida. She also holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, Virginia and completed her residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Swartzbaugh is a Diplomat with the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. In addition to English, she speaks German.  

“I’m excited to continue serving the Bangor community in my new role with St. Joseph Neurosurgery,” said Dr. Swartzbaugh. “I’ve always been impressed by the level of care and compassion demonstrated by St. Joseph Healthcare’s team, and I applaud them for expanding their neurosurgery service offerings.”

David W. Weitman, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Weitman earned his Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Biochemistry from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York prior to earning his Doctor of Medicine from State University of New York in Brooklyn, New York. He completed his residency in Neurological Surgery at George Washington Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Weitman is a Diplomat with the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. 

“I feel privileged to have provided care to thousands of people from our community over the last 20 years,” said Dr. Weitman. “I’m confident my transition to St. Joseph Healthcare will allow me to do even more for my patients and for our community.”
